OLIVER JAMES PLUMMER IS THE MAN ON THE MAT

CROW POSE (BAKASANA)

Benefits

  • Improves physical balance
  • Strengthens wrists, shoulders and arms
  • Engages abdominal muscles
  • Builds confidence for inversions

Tips

  • Put a blanket in front of you so you won't be afraid of hitting your head if you fall.
  • Don't spread your fingers so wide as this will dump too much pressure into the wrists. Instead, visualise gripping the mat with each finger as if you're climbing a wall to take pressure off from the wrists and help with balance.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not let your elbows splay out to either side. Keep them in line with your shoulders and wrists.
  • Do not let your elbows splay out to either side. Keep them in line with your shoulders and wrists.
  • Do not jump. This will throw off your balance. Instead, gently lean until you find that 'magic' tipping point where your legs become weightless.

Awareness

  • Crow Pose requires inner focus and concentration that keeps you in the present moment. It allows you to let go of the past and future thoughts and if we can push through the fear of taking on this pose, we can begin to experience transforming fear into faith, struggle to strength and 'no I can't' to 'yes I can'.
