The power of yoga and music

Pro teacher Ami Norton shares how music transformed her yoga practice and what to expect from Inside Flow at this year’s OM Yoga Show

Reading time: 1 minute

Do you have a song that instantly transports you to a moment in time? One that gives you goosebumps after just a few notes? Or a beat that makes your whole body want to move?

Music touches more areas of the brain than any other stimulus. It stirs emotion, sparks memory and connects us to something deeper – even when words fall short.

For years, I found it difficult to truly feel during my yoga practice. I could move and breathe, and my practice served me well – but with Inside Flow, the music added emotional depth and lightness that transformed it in ways I hadn’t expected.

An evolution of vinyasa, Inside Flow is a unique style created by Young Ho Kim, where every breath, every movement, is woven into a choreographed sequence set to music. The playlist isn’t background – it’s the soul of the practice, guiding you through a story and into your emotions, whether that’s joy, courage, release, or compassion.

Now, I combine my love of music and movement to guide students back to themselves — one beat, one breath, one flow at a time.
