Gemini is ruled by the planet Mercury. In Greece Mercury was known as Hermes. He carried the caduceus, a magic wand that could control the elements and transform whatever it touched into gold. This ancient symbol is known in many cultures and is associated with magical and healing powers. It is still an international symbol for both the medical profession and homeopaths.
Mercury was the swift messenger of the gods. Air is the element associated with Gemini, which fits in perfectly with the imagery of the winged feet and helmet that we use in the Gemini-inspired yoga practice in the Yoga by the Stars book. The winged power of Mercury lifts you higher; you overcome obstacles and feel that anything is possible. You find yourself achieving poses that were previously beyond your grasp.
It’s fun and exhilarating to perform yoga poses while imagining that you have wings. Imagining that you have winged feet works wonderfully well in poses such as Cat Pose with leg lifts (Marjaryasana variation), Dog Pose with leg lifts (Adho Mukha Svanasana), Boat Pose (Navasana), and Dancer Pose (Natarajasana).
The Egyptian symbol of Gemini was a woman and man holding hands. In Sanskrit, they were called Maithuna, the Lovers. The symbol of the twins resonates with a central tenet of yoga philosophy, which is the idea of uniting complimentary opposites, such as Sun and Moon, masculine and feminine, night and day, dark and light, action and rest, stillness and movement, earth and heaven. In the Gemini-inspired yoga practice in the Yoga by the Stars book we explore duality by integrating Sun and Moon imagery into our practice.
Try this: start your yoga practice with the following Sun and Moon visualization. Then during the practice keep returning to the sun and moon imagery. At the end of the practice, I guarantee that you will feel blissed-out!
Mountain Pose (Tadasana) with Sun and Moon Visualization
Stand tall, feet parallel and about hip width apart. Next drop your awareness down to your belly. Picture a warm sun there, radiating love and compassion. Then take your awareness to the space just above the crown of your head. Picture a cool, clear moon there, and imagine the moon’s clarity filling you with penetrating wisdom.
Silently repeat this affirmation: All is possible with wisdom and compassion.
Now, let’s look at some Gemini-Inspired Meditation Questions, adapted from the Yoga by the Stars book. The theme of the questions is “connecting with your genius and shining your light out into the world.” You could integrate the questions into your journaling practice, turn them over in your head on a meditative walk, meditate upon a question whilst staying in a yoga pose, or simply read them before bed and trust that your subconscious mind will come up with some insightful answers whilst you sleep.

Sunlight and shadow are integral aspects of our yoga practice. Yoga philosophy tells us that we can find the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and all the stars within our own body. The Sun is in the belly, and the Moon above the crown of the head. Prana manifests within the subtle body as both Sun and Moon energies. The spine is the Tree of Life with the Sun on one side, and the Moon on the other. Our Gemini-inspired yoga practice brings these two energies together, and heaven and earth are reunited.
