Breathe in the Calm

Finding sanctuary in flower essences. By Saskia Marjoram

Reading time: 2 minutes

So which ones do you need?

Everyone’s life and personality is different so it’s hard to say exactly which essences would suit your situation. However, many people take Rescue Remedy when they are stressed and can’t cope and although brilliant when you’ve had an immediate shock or trauma, there might be essences that are more specific for your particular problem and help to shift it for a much longer time.

Besides yoga, there are many other ways of reducing stress and anxiety in your life, however I’ve found nothing quite as quick and easy as taking flower essences.

I first discovered flower essences when I was working three jobs, had two unruly (neuro-divergent) pre-teen sons and one complicated and struggling relationship… something had to give, but there was no time or space (and very little spare money) to do anything to reduce the stress (fortunately the anxiety didn’t hit until peri-menopause).

And then a friend introduced me to flower essences – all I had to do was to remember to take them and it was like I had handed most of my problems over to someone else to sort out. I’m not going to say our problems disappeared overnight but within a matter of weeks things became much more manageable. I put clearer boundaries in place, I managed my time better, I realised that I had to make time to look after myself first, I started being able to ask for help, my sons were more stable and able to cope at school.

All of these things released a lot of the stress and I wanted to know all there was to know about these seemingly magical liquids, which has led to more than 20 years of making and prescribing my own range... so I’ve got to know the properties of each one pretty well – although, like most things, there is always more to learn.

From my own particular range I would definitely start with our Breathe Deep, Seek Peace blend for stress of any kind, and here are a few others that you might consider:

  • White Chestnut stops the thoughts going round and round in your head.
  • Oak can be incredibly useful if you are working too hard and never give in to rest.
  • Cherry Plum helps you calm and stay strong.
  • Carrot is very useful when you are feeling ungrounded and disorganised.
  • Borage is brilliant for helping you to cope with everything life throws at you.
  • Speedwell can help you to slow right down by reminding you to trust your intuition
