A Sonic Journey To The Higher Self
How music and silence can transform your practice. By Kev G
Where meditative stillness meets groove-forward rhythm, artist, yogi and spiritual seeker Kev G has just released his debut album Finding Flow, a genre-defying sonic journey born from silence, shaped in retreat, and created to be felt in the body.
It channels the introspective clarity Kev G discovered during extended retreats and durations spent in silence in India and Sweden. The result is a deeply spiritual yet rhythmically alive body of work that traverses meditative soul, and earthy textures.
From powerful vocals, to spatial awareness gripping resonance, the album weaves together presence, prayer, and pulse—rooted in a spiritual tradition and expanded through global contemplative practices.
Kev G’s mission resonates clearly: bringing people back to themselves through sound. This isn't just music to listen to — it's music to sit with. Here, the artist tells OM about how music and sound can elevate and enhance your yoga or spiritual practice.
Inspiration, awakening, healing
“As someone who birthed an entire album after spending 30 days in silence, it’s hard for me to get on my soap box and tell you that you should listen to my music or any music while you practice. In fact, I almost never do.
My recommendation is to use music or sound for inspiration, awakening and healing and to maintain silence for creation, revelation and knowing.
We all have those days where we don’t feel like we have the energy to practice. The right song can sometimes give us just the push that we need to begin, and to move through a practice that we otherwise wouldn’t have ever started.
It’s also the case that musical inspiration in support of your practice doesn’t have to occur on the mat. It’s great to listen to music off the mat that encourages you to practice and to live in alignment with your higher self.
You are probably already aware that all music is not created equally. While most music these days is meant to speak to our lower three chakras, we are in the beginning stages of experiencing a renaissance in conscious music.
Everything that you see in this world, including yourself, is vibrating at a certain frequency. The playing of certain sounds at certain frequencies allows you to align with those frequencies so that you may heal or be in union with something that is greater than yourself. As yogis, the music or sound typically played for this purpose is instrumental and can be facilitated through the use of instruments such as sound bowls, or tied to mantra or kirtan.
It is through these sounds that we are able to effortlessly slip into a meditative state where our monkey-mind slows down, our closed eyes do not fight to reopen, and our presence resides in a place of stillness that is in unity with all of the space that surrounds us.
"My recommendation is to use music or sound for inspiration, awakening and healing and to maintain silence for creation, revelation and knowing."
Divinity and a deeper meaning
More and more often we are beginning to see traditional artists that remind us of our divinity, and who we are on a much deeper level. How are they doing this? Lyrics, verse? Through a combination of sound and lyrics, these artists speak universal truths that give us goosebumps and tingles up our spine that confirm the authenticity and divine nature of their message.
These artists spark something inside of us that motivates us and makes us go after the things that are speaking to our soul. It is these artists that facilitate our practice and awaken things within us that provide guidance for our journey.
This was my intention with the release of my debut album ‘Finding Flow’. Deeply spiritual and rhythmically alive, it’s upbeat and soulful, with a vibe that invigorates and gets the listener into a reflective, meditative state. It’s meant to encourage and inspire your practice so that you may unlock the healing and untapped potential that lies deep within. It’s meant to remind you of who you are so that you may live fearlessly and in alignment with your highest self.
Creation, revelation, knowing
No matter your creative endeavour, whether it be music, film, architecture, or gardening, listening to, watching, or studying the works of others may give you new ideas and the foundation that you need to build from. However, true uniqueness and originality is channeled through silence. This same policy applies to the questions that you may have about whatever is going on in your life.
When I practice in silence, sounds, rhythms and verses come to me that are truly unique. Some of these sounds and rhythms end up as songs, while others serve simply as humming or chanting that is specifically catered to support and enhance my practice.
Even when sounds do not come and things remain silent, answers to the questions that I’m unsure of or that have been troubling me arise, and I’m guided with the next step that I need to take on my journey.”
