BREAK THE HABIT

A quick meditation to control those new year cravings. By Jill Lawson

Happy New Year to you and yours. The holiday season has passed, and it is a time to focus  on our health. As we journey forth with a fresh start, many are setting goals this month to be  and do our absolute best in the coming year. Some will choose to eat better, others will try to drink less.  Many will succeed, however it’s not easy to ignore our cravings. These gnawing sensations of wanting seem like they are hardwired in our DNA, but with a little practice, we can  overcome our yearnings.

If you struggle with saying no to those leftover Christmas cookies, or passing on that martini, the following meditation will help. Combat your cravings like a pro, and get on with your mighty resolutions for the new year.

This meditation is best practiced when a yearning for something is at its strongest. Wherever and whenever you are needing the strength to say no, take a brief pause, and practice the following. Do it as often as necessary, and let it help you kick your cravings to the curb.

Do it now
Begin by reviewing your intention for the new year. Focus on it for several minutes. Then, take five deep breaths. Within each inhale and exhale you will repeat to yourself a specific mantra.

First breath. Inhale, “I have a sound mind.” Exhale, “I am strong.”

Second breath. Inhale, “I have a healthy body.” Exhale, “I am capable.”

Third breath. Inhale, “I am in control of my mind and body.” Exhale, “I make wise choices.”

Fourth breath. Inhale, “I deserve to stick with my resolution.” Exhale, “I am successful.”

Fifth breath. Inhale, “I am happy and whole.” Exhale, “In this moment, I crave nothing.”

Continue with your breath and these mantras for as long as necessary until your cravings become a thing of the past. When you believe your mind to be sound and your body to be healthy, you will have better control of your actions. As a result, you will feel happy and whole, and this will lead to your success. Remember, in the present moment, you have everything you need to be well and feel complete. Believing you are more powerful than your cravings will help you attain your goals. May you step into the new year celebrating your triumphs, and carry your successes wherever your path may lead. Happy New Year, and Happy New You!
