
You ARE Your Purpose: Finding Wholeness Through Your Four Bodies
Many of us come to practices like yoga and meditation searching for something – perhaps peace, balance, deeper meaning, or that elusive sense of purpose. We stretch, we breathe, we ‘attempt’ to quiet the mind, hoping to find answers ‘out there’ or ‘in here’ to attain a future state of fulfillment. I spent years on this search myself, driven by a deep longing to understand my place in the world, only to arrive at a profound, yet simple, truth: Purpose isn't something you find; it's something you ARE. Finding purpose isn’t about searching—it's about remembering your inherent wholeness.

The Universal Search for Purpose
Like many, my search began early. I vividly remember being in Grade 1, playing ‘house’ at recess. As daughters of immigrants, my friend Farrah and I were told by the 'popular' girls we could only join if we played the dog. Woof. That little moment, seemingly small, planted a seed of questioning: Who am I? Am I worthy? This feeling echoed through various life stages – navigating engineering as a woman, the pressures of consulting, the joys and immense challenges of motherhood and divorce.
This relentless questioning fueled my desire to find a common thread, a formula for life. As a life and meditation coach who’s engaged with thousands, I saw this same search reflected everywhere. People chase external goals – career success, the 'perfect' body image, ideal relationships – believing they will finally bring purpose and fulfillment. We think, ‘When I achieve XYZ, then I'll feel worthy/loved/free/happy.’
But how often does achieving the goal leave us feeling strangely empty, soon chasing the next desire? This cycle happens because we're looking outward for something that can only be found within.
The Shift: Purpose Isn't Found, It's Embodied
My exploration led me to realize our search is often misguided. Purpose isn't a destination or an achievement. Purpose is who we are, right now. It’s an essence we simply need to know, trust, feel, and be. It's accessed not by striving harder, but by aligning our inner world.
Meet Your Inner Orchestra: The Four Bodies
How do we cultivate this inner alignment? By understanding the different dimensions of our being. While many traditions speak of multiple layers, I work with a practical framework I call The Four Bodies:
- Physical Body: Our tangible presence, the vessel experiencing sensations, health, tension, and ease. It’s where our life story leaves its physical imprint.
- Emotional Body: The realm of feelings – joy, sadness, anger, fear. Our internal guidance system, often holding unprocessed energy when feelings aren't allowed to flow.
- Mental Body: The seat of thoughts, analysis, planning, and judgment. Powerful, but often reflects deeper beliefs rather than being the root cause of distress.
- Egoic Body: Often misunderstood, this Body isn't just about arrogance or insecurity. It's the home of our deepest core beliefs, our identity, our sense of self, and our connection to meaning and spirit. It holds our limiting misbeliefs and our connection to infinite potential.
‘The Yoga of Being: Discovering Purpose Within Your Four Bodies’
These Four Bodies are intricately interconnected, like instruments in an orchestra. When one is out of tune (e.g., physical tension ignored, emotions suppressed, thoughts racing, limiting egoic beliefs running the show), the mind often tries to compensate with overthinking, worry, or planning – creating that feeling of anxiety or discord we try to meditate away. True harmony arises when all Four Bodies are acknowledged, appreciated, and aligned.
Finding Harmony: Aligning Your Four Bodies
We're often conditioned to work bottom-up: letting external events (Physical) dictate our feelings (Emotional), which shape our thoughts (Mental), reinforcing our beliefs about ourselves (Egoic). We think the job makes us worthy, the relationship makes us loved, the body makes us free.
True alignment, however, works top-down. It starts by connecting with the Egoic Body, examining our core beliefs. Are they rooted in fear, or in truth? The fundamental truth, often obscured by life's conditioning, is what I call The Unconditional Three:
- We are inherently Worthy.
- We are inherently Love.
- We are inherently Free.
Aligning our Egoic Body with these truths transforms our Mental Body (cultivating trust and clarity), allows our Emotional Body to flow with compassion, and brings ease and presence to our Physical Body. We shift from reacting to life to embodying our purpose. We stop seeing life as happening to us; we see it happening for us.
Practices for Alignment: Acceptance, Compassion, Trust, & Surrender (ACTS)
This alignment is a practice, much like yoga or meditation. It involves cultivating certain qualities within each body:
- Physical: Practicing Acceptance – of sensations, of limitations, of the present moment. Finding peace in 'It just is.'
- Emotional: Fostering Compassion – for ourselves and others, allowing all feelings to be felt without judgment. Recognizing 'We're all doing our best.'
- Mental: Developing Trust – in ourselves, in life's unfolding, moving beyond worry to an empowered perspective.
- Egoic: Cultivating Surrender – releasing the need to control, trusting the mystery, knowing we are purpose, connecting to the 'I AM'.
These sentiments – Acceptance, Compassion, Trust, Surrender (ACTS) – are muscles we build through mindful awareness.
Embodying Your Purpose: The Joy of Being
Purpose isn't a future goal; it’s the vibrant energy of your aligned self, expressed right now. It's knowing your worthiness (Egoic), trusting your path (Mental), feeling with compassion (Emotional), and simply being present in your body (Physical). It's embodying the truth of ‘I AM.’

Stop searching. Start aligning. Connect with the wisdom within your Four Bodies. Know your worthiness, embrace your love, feel your freedom. That is your purpose. Simply be you.
