From 28 years in the sky to opening Bakewell’s first yoga studio, Marie Kirkwood is flying high

Continuing the good news as more studios open up across the country, now the picturesque town of Bakewell in the Peak District is set to enjoy its first yoga centre.
After nearly three decades travelling the world as a flight service manager with Virgin Atlantic, Bakewell resident Marie Kirkwood has swapped long-haul flights for a new venture— opening Peak District Yoga Studio, the town’s very first dedicated yoga studio.
“During my 28-year career flying with Virgin Atlantic, I discovered yoga to be the perfect antidote to the demands of travel — helping me overcome jet lag and maintain my wellbeing through years of long-haul flying,”Kirkwood tells OM.
The new studio opening complements and grows her existing local yoga business that has thrived in recent years.
“For the past seven years, I’ve successfully grown Peak District Yoga alongside my aviation career, offering outdoor classes, private 1:1 sessions, yoga hikes and retreats in the beautiful Peak District. Now, as I hang up my wings to fully dedicate myself to teaching yoga, this October marks an exciting new chapter with the launch of Bakewell’s first yoga studio, offering small group classes alongside our outdoor experiences.”
The studio will offer several classes each day in an intimate setting. With a maximum of just 10 people per class, sessions are designed to feel personal, welcoming and accessible to everyone, from complete beginners to experienced yogis.
In addition to the new daily studio timetable, Peak District Yoga continues to offer private sessions, yoga for groups at holiday homes and guided yoga hikes in the National Park — creating a unique blend of indoor and outdoor wellbeing.
